How to search RIA websites for useful prospecting signals
Search collected RIA website text for a specific service, theme or platform, then read the matching passage in context. A useful result connects the phrase to the right account, identifies its source and makes the limits of that evidence visible.

What to take away
- Choose the source scope that matches your question.
- Distinguish a firm’s own service description from an article or third-party mention.
- A search with no results may reflect collection gaps or different wording.
BreakawayIQ displays why the query matched beneath each result. This capture searches provider-link evidence for Tamarac rather than treating every mention as the same kind of signal.
Give the keyword a job
Start with the question you want the text to answer. Are you looking for a firm that describes tax preparation, a practice serving business owners, or a public portal associated with a software platform? Each question calls for a different kind of evidence. A short, specific query is easier to interpret than a broad category with several possible meanings.
Write down alternative wording before searching. Firms may describe a similar service with different language. Search the variants separately and compare the passages. Treat the wording as the firm’s language, not a standardized statement that all matching firms provide an identical service.
Choose the source before judging the result
A website service page, professional biography, regulatory brochure and client-login link answer different questions. Use the relevant source scope where available. If you widen the scope, review which source produced each new match rather than assuming the broader result set is equally relevant.
| Source | Useful question | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Service page | Does the firm describe this service? | Whether the service is still offered |
| Biography | Does this person describe relevant experience? | Current affiliation and responsibility |
| Brochure text | What does the document disclose? | Filing date and document context |
| Portal link | Which public destination is linked? | Whether it reflects a current platform relationship |
Read the passage before qualifying the account
Check the subject of the sentence. A firm could publish commentary about a technology, describe a fund with a keyword in its name, or quote another organization. None of those observations automatically establishes that the firm uses the technology or wants the product you sell.
The Tamarac example in the screenshot is more specific: the collected evidence includes a public client-portal destination for 103 Advisory Group. That is a useful reason to investigate compatibility. It does not establish a current contract, seat count, satisfaction level or replacement project. Those are separate questions for later research or conversation.
Keep enough context to repeat the research
Save the query, scope and accepted accounts. In the account note or your research brief, include the source, date and short explanation of relevance. If the page changes, that record helps a colleague understand what the earlier decision was based on.
BreakawayIQ’s website and brochure collections are partial. The current coverage inventory distinguishes broader structured adviser data from the small full-text brochure pilot. A missing result should lead you to inspect the firm’s own website or filing, not conclude that the firm lacks the capability. Revisit important accounts before outreach and revise the brief when the source changes.
Your research checklist
- Define what the phrase should establish.
- Select the relevant source scope.
- Read the full matching passage and its date.
- Save the evidence and a separate question for what remains unknown.
Current BreakawayIQ coverage
Reviewed 2026-11-02. These limits apply to the product workflow described in this guide.
- Website keyword searchLimited coverage
Indexed website passages with matching text and sources. Website depth and freshness vary by account.
- Full ADV brochure searchLimited coverage
Source-linked ADV and CRS text with physical page citations. Brochure collection is expanding from a pilot; structured ADV fields have wider coverage.
- Technology & client portalsLimited coverage
Observed public portal links with evidence. A link does not confirm a vendor contract.
