RIA AUM: how to use firm size in prospecting
Use RIA assets under management as a sizing filter, then qualify the account with its business model, client mix, people and service evidence. Keep the asset definition and reporting date visible so the number does not imply more than it measures.

What to take away
- Reported regulatory AUM is a defined filing measure, not a software budget.
- An industry average can hide the differences between very different firms.
- Size rankings help map a market; they do not establish investment quality.
A firm profile shows reported regulatory AUM alongside account, employee and business information. These fields add context; they are not a prediction of purchasing capacity.
Know which asset figure you are using
Form ADV Part 1A asks advisers to report regulatory assets under management in Item 5.F. When researching a firm, keep that definition and the filing date with the figure. A differently labelled asset number on a website may describe a different scope and should not be silently substituted.

Use a relevant comparison group
Before asking for the average RIA AUM, decide which firms belong in the calculation. A dataset mixing different client types, business models and reporting dates can produce an average with little relevance to the account you want to serve. A few very large observations can also pull a mean upward.
For prospecting, build a comparison group that reflects your actual market. Document the inclusion rules and missing values. If you calculate a mean or median, label it as a statistic for that group and snapshot. Do not present it as a universal industry benchmark. This guide does not publish an average because it has not established and validated such a comparison population.
Build size bands around your sales process
Choose boundaries because they change how you serve an account. A team with a lightweight onboarding process might prioritize simpler firms; another may be equipped for a longer implementation involving several departments. Reported AUM can help organize that research, but it cannot establish either process by itself.
Use an illustrative set of bands as a working hypothesis, review sample firms in each, and adjust based on what you learn. Avoid treating an arbitrary threshold as a proven predictor of conversion.
Read the business behind the number
Two firms with similar reported assets may need different products. Look at the clients and services they describe, the people involved and the operational context you can establish from sources. A strong fit note explains those connections rather than repeating the AUM value.
Do not infer revenue, available investment capital, technology spend or willingness to buy from AUM alone. Likewise, a higher asset figure between observations needs context before it becomes a growth claim. Differences in dates, reporting scope or the underlying business can change what the comparison means.
Use state rankings to orient the research
BreakawayIQ’s public state pages rank included SEC-registered advisers by reported regulatory AUM and link into firm profiles. The methodology explains the population and exclusions. Use the pages to explore a territory, then move to the profile and sources for qualification.
A principal-office state is not a complete map of where a firm serves clients. A large firm may operate across several markets, while a smaller firm may be a closer fit for your offer. Keep the ranking as one input to the prospect list and preserve the reporting date when you reuse a figure in your sales materials.
Your research checklist
- Check the asset definition and reporting date.
- Choose a comparison group relevant to your market.
- Validate size bands against actual business differences.
- Use profiles and sources before turning a ranking into a target list.
